The Piano Cycle “On Overgrown Paths” is an ideal introduction to the music of the Czech (Moravian) composer Leoš Janáček (1854 – 1928). The individual compositions of the first series of this autobiographical cycle extend from the turn of the century 1900 to the year of publication in 1911. A direct connection to the death of his only 20-year-old daughter Olga in 1903 is not given due to the individual date, but it is Janáčeks peculiarity of incorporating autobiographical memories into his works only after a some years. As in in his wind sextet “Mladi” (Youth) from 1924.
